Forever 18 Inches Pattern Hack: Santa's Helper Outfit

Make a fun holiday outfit with this delightful pattern hack that comes to us from Karen of Forever 18 Inches!

Giveaway Update:  Our winner is Jeannette who said "My favorite Christmas tradition, How can you pick one, I love everything about christmas, from baking cookies to wrapping beautiful presents, family, church, decorations and snow on Christmas Eve. if we’re lucky. It truly is the Most Wonderful time of the Year." Thanks to all who entered!  We loved reading through all the comments!

Get into the holiday spirit as Karen teaches us how to use her Curving Cardigan pattern and Versatility Dress pattern to create a charming holiday outfit that is sure to spread a little Christmas joy to all who see it! Complete the outfit with the hat from the Doll Tag Clothing Santa pattern!

(Click on the image or the link above to find the patterns on aleksandrajones.)

Let's get started..

Supplies Needed:
-1/4 yd. Medium-weight one-way stretch stable knit fabric (no more than 30% stretch)
- 1/2 yd. lightweight fleece with a one-way stretch
- Matching thread
-Small, very sharp scissors
- ¼" Stay Tape (1/2" wide tape can be cut lengthwise) OR ¼" strips of very lightweight interfacing
- Snaps or Velcro to close the back of the dress
- A pom pom about the size of a nickel
- 1/3 yd. 3/8" black ribbon for a belt
- One decorative slide with a 3/8" opening to use as a belt buckle
- 1" of Hook-and-Loop to close the belt
- Fabri-Tac or other glue to apply the Hook-and-Loop to the belt

To begin: Make the cardigan and hat in the contrasting knit and fleece fabrics according to the pattern directions.

Instructions:

1. Cut a rectangle from the knit fabric measuring 5.75" x 30.5", as directed in the Option 3 layout for the Versatility Dress. Next, cut a rectangle from the fleece fabric measuring 2.5" x 31". Make sure the stretch is cut with the long side of the rectangle.

2. Pin one long edge of the fleece to one long edge of the knit, RIGHT sides together. Allow about ½" of the fleece to overlap each side of the knit. Stitch, using a ½" wide seam.

3. Using small, sharp scissors, trim off half of the seam allowance on the fleece only.

4. WRAP the fleece over the edge of the knit and pin it in place.
Here's a view from the WRONG side….

…and a view from the RIGHT side.

5. Working from the RIGHT side, stitch a scant 1/8" above the fleece/knit seam onto the knit (with thread that matches the fabric). Trim the short edges of the fleece to the same length as the short edges of the knit Skirt.

6. Working from the WRONG side, trim away the excess fleece very close to the stitching line. (No worries; the fleece won't ravel) Congratulations! You've finished the edge of the skirt for the dress. Proceed to the Option 3 instructions for the Versatility Dress and sew as directed (except for the hem, which you've already already sewn).

7. To make the belt: Pull the slide onto the ribbon and center it. Try the dress on your doll, and fit the belt over the dress to determine the length you need. Fold the edges of the ribbon over to the WRONG side and glue them with Fabri-Tac; then glue corresponding ½" pieces of Hook-and-Loop onto the belt ends.

CONGRATULATIONS! Your outfit is finished!

The day before we trim our tree, my family comes over and we make, and decorate cut out Christmas cookies. The next day, we all trim the tree, but do not turn on the tree lights. We then make hot chocolate and place our cookies on a large plate and place both of them a tablecloth that has been spread out on the floor next to the unlit tree. Everyone then sits around the goodies on the floor, in front of the tree, all lights out, the tree is turned one.

One of my favorite Christmas traditions is being together with family (my mom, my daughter, my son, and my amazing granddaughter who is 5) for dinner and giving the stockings and gifts to my family, My kids still get stockings at my house even though they are grown. They get to open the stockings when we get together Christmas day before dinner. Then we eat dinner and clean up. Then we all go in to the living room by the tree and we exchange gifts. I love watching them open their gifts. My family is the most important thing in my life! We have other traditions also but being with them is my Christmas gift!

One of my favorite Christmas traditions is baking and building a whole bunch of gingerbread houses, people, and trees. Then, I invite all of my friends’ children, and hand all of the adults frosting guns. The adults run around piping royal icing on the pre-built houses, while the children stick-on candies and direct the adults. Everyone goes home with a decorated house, with their name in gingerbread cookies on top—and they can eat it for weeks! It is chaotic, hilarious, and warms my heart.

I remember a long time ago my parents finished building their home. For someone reason we were there late going back to our old place; my brother I decided to check out the boxes in the living room, only to find the Christmas decorations and a put together tree. After a few hours we finished we lit the tree. We were so proud of ourselves. It’s our story we have told to friends & growing family over the years.Mom had tears to see how neat the bottom of the
tree looked. We were too short to do the top.

Our Christmas tradition starts the day after Thanksgiving. My husband decorates the outside of the house while I prepare and decorate the inside of the house. The Christmas tree is set up during the day. While doing all these, I have homemade potpourri simmering on the stove, which makes our whole house smell like Christmas. That evening, we have Christmas music playing while we decorate the tree. I started a Christmas ornament collection for our children from their First Christmas. Then, as they got older, we had a tradition of going to a Christmas store and letting them choose their decoration for that Christmas. I have them written in a small book: Christmas 2016…where we celebrated Christmas…who was with us…their ages and then list their ornament(s).

Christmas Eve…we have a prime rib dinner at home. We attend midnight Mass. After Mass, we open our Christmas presents from within the family. On Christmas morning, we open presents from Santa Claus. Then, we have our Christmas Day feast at lunch time.

After our Christmas feast, we sit around as a family.

One of my favorite Christmas traditions is the Advent calendar we hang on the front door. When the kids were very little we put little candies in the pockets, so every day they’d get a treat. Their Dad thought that this was not a very good idea, so we started putting coins in the pockets. Then both of our children would say a prayer each day, and then pull out a coin. By the time December 25th came around they had quite a little savings going! We’d always put in dollar bills, or 5-dollar bills on the 25th as they got older. We still hang the Advent calendar every year, and now that our daughter is married and has a new house of her own, we sent her an advent calendar so she and her husband could carry on the tradition!

Now they have an 18 year old boy, our grandson, who along with all his cousins still enjoys the yearly visit of Santa at our family Christmas party!
